FAQ

Frequently asked questions about beginner remote work.

If you have a question that isn't answered below, the contact page is the best place to send it. Common questions get added here over time.

Do I really need zero experience to use RemoteRise?

Yes. The site is built around the assumption that you have no prior remote work experience. The category pages, the getting-started guide, and the per-listing tips are all written for people starting from scratch. If you already have remote experience, RemoteRise will still work for you — just skip the introductory material.

Is RemoteRise free?

Completely free for applicants. There is no signup, no paywall, no premium tier. The site is supported by a small number of clearly-labeled display ads.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can browse, read every guide, and apply to any listing without creating an account. We don't currently offer accounts because we don't need to — there's nothing on the site that benefits from being personalized to a logged-in user.

Where do the job listings come from?

Primarily the public Remotive jobs API, with We Work Remotely as a fallback when needed. The exact data source for any given build is documented in our internal data file. Every listing links back to its original source so you can verify it.

How often are listings refreshed?

Listings are rebuilt regularly. Postings older than 60 days are deprioritized, and postings older than 90 days are removed automatically so you don't waste time on dead links.

Can I trust the salary information?

If a listing on RemoteRise mentions a salary, that salary was published by the employer themselves. We do not estimate, predict, or invent salary numbers. If a listing has no salary, the employer didn't publish one — feel free to ask in your application.

Is remote work safe for beginners? I keep seeing scam warnings.

Most legitimate remote employers are exactly what they claim to be. The two simplest scam filters are: (1) you should never have to pay anything to start a job, and (2) you should never accept a payment that you're then asked to forward to a third party. If either of those happens, walk away. Our payments guide has a longer list of red flags.

I live outside the US/EU/UK. Can I still find work here?

Yes. We deliberately prioritize "Worldwide" listings on category pages, and many of our employers hire across continents. Country-specific tax and payment information varies — see our payments page for the basics, and consult a local accountant in your first year of cross-border work.

How long does it usually take a beginner to land their first remote job?

In our experience, the median is 4-8 weeks from first serious application to signed offer, with 30-60 applications submitted in that window. Beginners who apply daily, follow up after 5 business days, and personalize the first paragraph of every cover letter consistently land faster than those who don't.

Do remote employers really hire people without degrees?

For the categories we focus on (customer support, virtual assistance, content moderation, transcription, junior writing, basic design, data entry), the majority of employers do not require a degree. They care about your communication, reliability, and willingness to learn. Some specialized roles still require degrees or certifications — those will be obvious from the listing.

Should I start with a freelance marketplace (Upwork, Fiverr) or a full-time role?

If you can land a full-time entry-level role, take it. The income is more stable, the learning curve is steeper in a good way, and you'll build references faster. Freelance marketplaces are a reasonable backup if you can't get a full-time offer in your first 60 days, but the rates are lower and the competition is brutal.

How do I avoid burning out as a remote worker?

Set a hard end-of-day. Close your laptop, walk out of your work spot, and don't come back. The biggest predictor of remote burnout is "the office" being the same room you eat dinner in. Even an hour of separation between work-mode and life-mode is enough.

Can I work multiple remote jobs at once?

Legally, in most countries, yes — though many employment contracts restrict working for direct competitors. Practically, holding multiple full-time roles is a recipe for burning all of them down within six months. We recommend starting with one role, getting good at it, and only adding a second job if it's clearly within your capacity and not in conflict with the first.

What if my application gets ghosted?

It's normal. Send one polite follow-up after 5 business days, then move on. Don't take it personally — most "ghosted" applications are casualties of process disorganization on the employer's side, not a judgment of you.

Do you have a newsletter?

Not yet, but we're considering one for late 2025. The contact page is the best way to tell us what you'd want from one.

How can I contribute or correct a listing?

Send a note via the contact form — corrections to listings (wrong company, dead URL, misleading salary) get fixed within a couple of business days.
