Design at a remote-first company is mostly Figma, mostly async, and mostly cross-functional. You will pair with product managers, engineers, and marketers more often than you pair with other designers. The work skews toward making interfaces that real users can navigate without instructions, not toward making award-show showpieces. That is good news for beginners — clarity beats flair.

A typical day

A junior designer day usually involves catching up on overnight Figma comments, a couple of focused 90-minute design blocks, an engineer handoff conversation in writing, and a portfolio-quality screenshot or two for the changelog. Senior designers will weigh in on your work more often than they would in an office, so expect lots of asynchronous feedback.

Beginner skills that matter

Hiring managers in this category care about evidence over credentials. The skills below are what separate a "yes" pile from a "no" pile when there is no professional experience on the résumé:

• Figma fluency
• Visual hierarchy and typography fundamentals
• Comfort accepting feedback in writing
• Basic file-organization discipline
• Curiosity about the product itself

What it pays

Ranges combine US Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational data with publicly-reported remote-work salary surveys (Buffer, FlexJobs, We Work Remotely). Outside the US, expect 30–60% of the listed range in lower-cost regions and parity with US rates for fully-distributed companies that pay globally.

How to get hired with no experience

Curate a tight portfolio. Six excellent pieces beat twenty mediocre ones. For each piece, write a paragraph explaining the problem, the constraints, and the trade-offs you made — process narration is what separates "design student" from "designer" in a hiring manager's eyes.

What to put in your application

Apply with a portfolio link, not attachments. Choose case studies that resemble the work the company actually does (a SaaS company will not be wowed by editorial layouts). Show one piece of writing — your written explanation of a project — early in the portfolio.

Your first year on the job

Beginners in this category tend to follow a similar trajectory in their first 12 months. Expect rough milestones along the lines of:
